What is volatility in Casino games?

Written by Sylvia

Volatility in casino games refers to the level of risk and how often a game is expected to produce wins, as well as how large those wins tend to be. It describes the balance between win frequency and payout size.

Low volatility games typically provide more frequent wins, but they are usually smaller in value. For example, a game like roulette using outside bets (such as red/black or even/odd) or a conservative blackjack strategy tends to produce steadier, smaller swings, helping extend gameplay with more consistent but modest results.

High volatility games, on the other hand, tend to produce wins less often, but the wins can be significantly larger when they occur. For example, betting on single numbers in roulette or playing high-risk blackjack strategies can result in long losing or break-even stretches followed by occasional large payouts.

Medium volatility games sit between these two extremes, offering a balance of moderate win frequency and payout size.

Volatility does not affect fairness or the long-term RTP of a game, but it strongly influences the overall experience by shaping how wins and losses are distributed over time.
